We enjoy talking to the many people who come by the Idyll Cravings booths at the Southlands or Parker Farmer’s Markets. Since our Cranberry Jalapeno Chutney is a new product on the market (just premiered the end of May) we are interested in hearing what’s on your mind. Many of you, like Michael, are very conscious of how much sugar is in your diet.
Since research studies have shown that eating too much sugar can have many negative effects on our health it makes sense for people who are health conscious to pay attention to their sugar intake. Propensity for heart disease, diabetes and cancer has been linked to excess sugar consumption let alone the fact it can make us fat. (Click Here for an interesting article abut this) All forms of sucrose whether natural or high-fructose have the same negative effects on our health. It is sad that 80% of our food choices contain sugar. Sugar is a great flavor enhancer which certainly explains why we like it so much. It is almost addictive so no wonder it's everywhere because we want it!
With those of you who are sugar watchers in mind we hired a commercial laboratory to perform a nutritional analysis on our Cranberry Jalapeno Chutney. The results told us that 1 teaspoon of our chutney contains only 1 gram of sugar, which is one-third of the sugar typically found in marmalade, one-quarter of sugar in most jellies and jams and one-half of sugar in barbeque sauce. Our Cranberry Jalapeno Chutney is actually considered to be a low sugar product.
Another dietary item that has been a topic of our conversations is gluten. According to the National Institutes of Health, Univ. of Chicago Celiac Disease Center between 5% and 10% of all people may suffer from a gluten sensitivity of some form. 1 out of 133 Americans have Celiac Disease and 97% are estimated to be undiagnosed. Happily we can report our Cranberry Jalapeno Chutney is Gluten Free.
This is good food news for our customers since they like to use the Cranberry Jalapeno Chutney as a glaze, grilling sauce and spread.
Stay Tasty! (And healthy too.)
